How Much Do Language Learning Programs Cost?

Learning a new language can be tough, but finding a program that works best for you, your schedule, and your budget can be even more difficult. There are tons of language-learning programs out there, all with different teaching methods and a wide array of prices. Here is a breakdown of some of the most talked-about language learning programs.

Pimsleur

Pimsleur is an online language course that claims to be “scientifically-sequenced” to help you learn a language. The immersion program starts off with conversations between you and a native speaker. As you progress, the learner is able to retain the language through their four-step process of interval recall, anticipation, core vocabulary, and organic learning. There are three individual learning levels available as a CD or MP3 form and each are priced separately, ranging from $99.95 to $193.95. The value pack offers levels 1-3 for $294.80 to $417. There are over fifty languages to choose from. Both the compact disk and digital download programs offer 30 lessons per level. They even throw in a 30-day money-back guarantee if the user isn’t satisfied.

Michael Thomas Method

The Michael Thomas Method is an online language learning program that promises to deliver a learning experience quite different from the rest. It’s designed for audio learners and instructs the listener using elements from their native language. At first glance, the MTM method seems the most affordable. If you take a closer look you’ll find that it recommends a series of their programs: Start ($14.95), Total ($120 to $135), and Perfect ($120 to $135). The Start program is described as an introduction to the method of teaching. It includes one hour of audio and teaches 50 vocabulary words. The Total and Perfect programs offer a combined 21 hours of audio, practice exercises, and several hours of vocabulary building. The courses are Mac and Windows friendly and come with a free app. The programs are offered in Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone is perhaps the most well-known language learning program and has a selection of 31 languages. The classic immersion technique helps the learner dive right into their chosen language. The program comes in a desktop and online version, but there is quite a difference between the two. For $199, the desktop program can be installed on two computers and gives an unlimited amount access to up to five family members. It also comes with a three-month online trial and limited access to games, and mobile apps. Also priced at $199, the online program is limited to 24-month access and only allows one user per fee. The price includes complete access to Rosetta Stone’s mobile apps.
