With the price of secondary education climbing higher each year, you’re probably wondering how to pay for your degree. There are plenty of scholarship opportunities out there, especially if you are a minority student. Scholarships for minorities are a great way to fund your education. We’ve found three great scholarships for Hispanic students, Native Americans, African Americans and Asian Americans entering college.
- American Indian Science and Engineering Society Scholarships
The American Indian Science and Engineering Society offers plenty of scholarships to Native American, Native Hawaiian, or Alaska Native STEM students. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. One of their biggest scholarships for minorities is the NAVSEA and Strategic Systems Programs Scholarship; the recipient is given $10,000 for their freshman year. - Gates Millennium Scholars Program
African American, Native American, Asian American, and Hispanic students are able to apply for this life-changing scholarship. Founded in 1999 by a billion-dollar grant, the Gates Millennium Scholars Program aims to increase representation these low-minority fields of study: Computer science, Education, Library science, Engineering, Mathematics, Public health, and Science.
Applicants must qualify for the federal Pell Grant and must be a first-time, full-time, degree-seeking college student at an accredited college or university. Students must either have a GED or a minimum GPA of 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale); not only must potential millennium scholars be excellent students, they must also be present in their communities. Therefore, applicants for this minority scholarship must be nominated on the basis of their academic record and recommended by their community service and leadership activities. - Chicana/Latina Foundation Scholarship Program
Chicana and Latina students living in Northern California should apply to this scholarship for minorities that is geared toward Hispanic students. In order to qualify, you should be enrolled in an accredited community college, four-year college, or university in one of 12 North California counties. As long as applicants will be full-time students during the award year and have at least 12 completed college credits after high school graduation, they are eligible. Undergrad applicants have a minimum college GPA requirement of 2.5, while graduate students have a GPA requirement of at least 3.0.
Award recipients get $1,500, and must attend the Chicana/Latina Foundation Leadership Institute and volunteer 10 hours to CLF before the March of the year after receiving the award. If you win the scholarship, you may reapply for four years after receiving it.
