5 Tips for Remodeling Your Bathroom on a Budget

Since the bathroom is one of the most frequently visited rooms of the home, adding a bit of personal flair to this space can make the whole house seem more inviting. If you have guests over, you want to show that you can have a stylish and clean bathroom -- a bathroom can change a visitor’s whole perception of your home. Since the average bathroom remodel costs right around $10,000, price often scares homeowners away from remodels. However, you don’t have to spend that much money to make your bathroom feel brand new. Here are some simple ideas for bathroom renovations on a budget.

  1. Paint your style
Nothing can spruce up a bathroom easier than a fresh coat of paint. If you do the work yourself, this option won’t cost anything more than a gallon or two of paint (anywhere from $30 to $60, depending on the brand and quality) and a few cheap brushes. Nothing fits your own style better than choosing your own paint color -- just be sure you prepare for the difficulty of painting around the sink and other fixtures. Also be sure to choose moisture resistant paint for bathroom usage.
  2. Grout and caulk
The grout in your bathroom can easily become a grimy eyesore. To bring a fresh feeling to your bathroom simply give these grout lines a good scrub. Likewise, an often ignored aspect of your bathroom is the caulk around your sink and tub. Put fresh caulk down in clean, straight lines
  3. Focus on simple upgrades
Not every renovation needs to be huge. Try lining your vanity with fabric or surrounding your mirror with decorative molding. Upgrades like these will make what you already have feel like something new and will cost only a fraction of the price.
  4. New accessories
If you already have a sink and tub that you like, it is fairly easy to add a few accessories to spruce up the rest of the room. Adding a shelf with some live plants, placing a vase or other decorative item on your countertop, or even purchasing new hooks or towel racks for your wall can make your bathroom feel like some place new. While it doesn’t seem like this would do much, it is a much cheaper way of bringing new looks into a dated bathroom.
  5. Update fixtures
A good renovation doesn’t always require a new tub or new countertops. Consider replacing the faucets on your tub and sink for an updated look, or even buy a whole new sink! Replacing your tub may cost anywhere from $450 to $1000, but a new sink will only set you back between $105 and $250.  Another option would be to purchase new light fixtures. Simple lights can be purchased for less than $200, making them a financially painless addition.
