Cheap Charlies: Celebrities Who Are Notoriously Bad Tippers

Madonna

Madonna

Madonna is one of the biggest pop stars in history and undoubtedly has tons of extra cash lying around, but reports have shown that you won’t find much of that extra cash on her table after a meal at a restaurant.

It has been said that she once left an $18 tip for a $400 meal at a restaurant in London, and another time she left no kind of tip at all after eating at a restaurant in New York. The Queen of Pop is definitely not the Queen of Leaving Tips.

Usher

Usher

Usher may be an inspiration to many adoring fans, especially when he was at the peak of his career, but is his autograph worth anything outside of the novelty?

Usher seems to think so. Waiters who have worked with Usher at different restaurants have said that he has often left his autograph as a tip, not actual cash. You have to sign the receipt if you paid with a card anyway, so you’re not actually doing anyone a favor, Usher. His autograph doesn’t even sell for $5 online anyway.

Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst

Movie star Kirsten Dunst seems to not even consider tipping an option, according to different stories from waiters around the internet.

In one story, Dunst didn’t leave a tip even after the manager of that restaurant waived the price of her ticket because of her fame, which, okay, she might have been thrown off and forgot. However, in another story she paid a large ticket, but completely forgot to leave a tip. That’s just inconsiderate.

Jeremy Piven

Jeremy Piven

Actor Jeremy Piven, known for starring in a couple of movies that people might know about, seems to think that his work is worth well more than 20% of any meal ticket.

Piven was actually banned from the high-end sushi restaurant Nobu in Aspen, Colorado, for leaving the wait staff a signed DVD copy of his show Entourage instead of gratuity. Needless to say, the restaurant was pretty upset.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears

While Britney has definitely had her moments of being a ditsy pop star, it turns out that these moments carry over into her tipping habits as well.

Stories have emerged of Britney racking up an over $200 ticket at a restaurant for her and her friends, but not even a penny was left as a tip. Another story reported by Business Insider tells of Spears dumping a pile of loose change at the feet of a valet and saying, “There’s your tip.”

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods

In golf, it is customary to tip your golf caddy who carries your equipment for you around the course while you play for oftentimes hours. However, it has been reported that Tiger Woods doesn’t even carry cash. You can’t tip a golf caddy with a card!

Some have even said that this includes at big tournaments where he was likely paid the big bucks for placing high. It also carries over into his dining habits. This is definitely another not-so-good look for Tiger Woods.

Rachael Ray

Rachael Ray

Rachael Ray is known for her budget-friendly cooking, which extends into her budget-friendly cookbooks, cooking shows, and even cookware. However, it looks like it also extends into paying for her food as well.

Waiters have said that Ray likes to save money by tipping only 10% for meals instead of the traditional 20%, probably to stay within budget. Well, like they say, cooking at home is usually cheaper than eating out, so maybe eating out just isn’t in the budget if you can’t tip 20%. We can’t all be home chefs.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

“The Rock” is essentially America’s Sweetheart at this point. He got his start as a wrestler, but now every home in America loves to see this loveable guy on screen.

However, one waiter reports that his tipping habits are not as nice. When Johnson wanted to eat at a restaurant before business hours to avoid fans, he only left a seven-dollar tip for a large meal when he was done eating. This isn’t acceptable, even if you didn’t inconvenience an entire business.

LeSean McCoy

LeSean McCoy

Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy once left a $0.20 tip for a bill of $61.56 at a burger restaurant in Philadelphia. The restaurant posted this disgrace on Facebook, angry from the encounter.

However, it turns out the real disgrace was the service at the restaurant. McCoy left a statement with NJ.com’s Eliot Shorr-Parks who tweeted that McCoy left such a poor tip because he had a poor experience. McCoy said, "I'll be honest like always. The tip was a statement." Is this still acceptable?

Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan

While the beloved late Kobe Bryant had the reputation of being a fantastic tipper, fellow basketball superstar Michael Jordan’s reputation for tipping is not the same.

Restaurants in Las Vegas don’t like it when Jordan walks in, not because of the commotion it might cause with possible fans, but because of his terrible tips. Steve Schirripa appeared on the Talking Sopranos podcast and said that in Vegas “they call Michael Jordan, ‘Hoarding Michael Jordan.’”

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner

Another receipt has been revealed from the world of the Kardashians, this time it is an actual receipt that belongs to Kendall Jenner and shows a 0% gratuity.

This scandal aired after Jenner went out on the town, forgot to tip, and the venue posted a picture of the lacking receipt on Instagram. However, Jenner later responded on Twitter, “damn, i guess next time we won't tip in cash.” So maybe she did end up leaving a tip after all.

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand

Not only has the famous Barbra Streisand become infamous among waiters for being demanding, but she is also known for not leaving the best tips.

Rumor has it that she once left a $10 tip for a meal that was $450. That is 2.2% gratuity! The standard is ten times more than that. It should have at least been a $90 tip.

Mick Jagger

Mick Jagger

At one time Mick Jagger might have been the most famous rock star on the planet, but his waiters would still like him to leave at least a 15% tip when he dines at their restaurants. 20% is tradition, but 15% is basic. He definitely has the extra cash.

However, one pizza place in Washington D.C. has reported Jagger tipping $10 for a $90 ticket, 11% gratuity. One time he didn’t even leave a tip. Certainly a successful musician such as Mick Jagger could have given at least a $15 tip.

Sean Penn

Sean Penn

Much like his ex-wife Madonna, Sean Penn is also notorious for being a bad tipper, even though, as you probably know, his net worth of $70 million could cover nearly any size tip.

He once had a bill of $450 while out to eat, but Penn nor any of his tablemates cared to even leave a dollar of a tip, let alone the customary $90 20% tip. This just isn’t acceptable.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams

While eating at a restaurant in Manhattan during the U.S. Open in 2016, Williams and a group of friends decided to go out to eat at a restaurant.

The owner of the restaurant was thrilled to host this group, and even offered to give them their meal on-the-house. However, Rumor has it that the group left no sort of tip and not even a “thank you.” Rude.

Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg

Back in 2013, reports showed that Mark Zuckerberg is a cheapskate. However, he is also the youngest person on the top 20 richest people in the world list, but did he really get there by being cheap?

Apparently, while Zuckerberg was spending New Year’s Eve at the Ritz-Carlton in Maui, he picked apart every detail of his bill, including a $5 charge for a soda. If being a bad customer is how you become a billionaire, all of the Karens should have already made the list.

Lea Michele

Lea Michele

Lea Michele isn’t known for being the nicest person. Many people did not like her character on Glee, but people in real life aren’t that keen of her either, especially waiters.

Michele is known for leaving 10% gratuity for most of her meals, which is 5% away from acceptable, and 10% away from customary. Come on, Lea! We want you to be nicer.

Scottie Pippen

Scottie Pippen

Much like Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen is also known for being cheap among Las Vegas restaurants.

In the same "Talking Sopranos" podcast episode where he mentioned Michael Jordan, Schirripa also described Pippen as being known as, ‘“No Tippin’ Pippen.”

Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl might have appeared in some of our favorite movies, but she’s definitely not the most popular actress in Hollywood.

Heigl is known for being high-maintenance at restaurants, and it has even been rumored that she is not good at leaving tips either. That’s not a good look.

Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby

Obviously, Bill Cosby has a lot more issues than being a terrible tipper but if his tipping was any indication of his being a terrible human being, then clearly the signs were there that Bill Cosby was not a good man. Generally, if you can’t afford to tip, then you can’t afford to eat out. Bill Cosby could afford it though, so what’s his excuse?

He doesn’t have one. Whatever his service was like, leaving a $3 tip is just cruel. Waiters and waitresses make less than minimum wage because of tip culture and not tipping means they are working for next to nothing. Bill Cosby allegedly left a mere $3 tip on a bill that was $350. In case you needed another reason to hate the man – now you have one.

Richard Dreyfuss

Richard Dreyfuss

Richard Dreyfuss, star if classic films like Jaws, The Goodbye Girl and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, is usually lovable on camera, but not so much in real life it seems. He’s definitely not a hero when it comes to being a restaurant patron as former waitress Brigette Everett told talk show host Andy Cohen.

Richard Dreyfuss allegedly ordered a tuna roll that he had sent back, which isn’t bad in and of itself but he wasn’t exactly nice about it. To make matters worse, he didn’t show any gratitude either, leaving a bad tip for the waitress – who doesn’t cook the food mind you!

David Lee Roth

David Lee Roth

David Lee Roth is a notable musician, songwriter, guitarist, saxophone player and record producer. Ass a member of Van Halen, his music has been played over and over and over the years, including in films like Zombieland, Superbad and Argo. But as accomplished as he is, is he a good tipper?

Nope. This guy is a terrible tipper. He actually has a reputation for leaving tips of just 10%. The general rule is that if your service is really bad, you can maybe leave a 15% tip. If your service is good, you should leave at least a 20% tip. If your service is spectacular, you should consider leaving a 25% tip or maybe round up a little.

Mark McGwire

Mark McGwire

Mark McGwire, nicknamed Big Mac, was a professional first baseman who holds the record for the most bats per home run ratio in major league baseball. He previously set a record in 1998 for the most home runs in a single season. Now it seems he’s trying to set himself a new record.

That is, if he is trying to be labeled as the biggest chump in the MLB. Mark McGwire not only is reportedly a bad tipper but he also has been known to skip out on the bill. Should he be arrested for stealing food. Probably so. But since he hasn’t yet, we’ll give him a tip. Stop being a cheap b%&#$.

James 'Buster' Douglas

James 'Buster' Douglas

James ‘Buster’ Douglas, if you don’t know, is a former professional boxer who competed between 1981 and 1999. He famously became the undisputed world heavyweight champion in 1990 after defeating Mike Tyson. It was one of the biggest upsets in the history of boxing – but apparently, his tipping is even more upsetting.

A Columbus Steakhouse waiter claimed that Buster left a mere $10 tip on a $200 bill, which was made worse by the fact that he and his group were taking up multiple tables at the restaurant in his section. This meant the waiter didn’t even have a chance to make up for poor tips with more generous customers.

Warren Sapp

Warren Sapp

Warren Sapp is a former American football defensive tackle in the NFL. He played for 13 seasons with a majority of those being with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While the NFL may have been impressed with him, our nation’s servers are less than impressed with this bucko.

In a viral tweet, a picture showed his receipt at a sports bar in Florida. Written on the receipt, were the words “Boys don’t tip!” In response to this, Sapp confirmed that he left no tip and also claimed that he got terrible service. He also said that he was offended that the waitress referred to himself and his crew as boys. However, security camera footage of the restaurant, reviewed by TMZ, showed that their server returned to their table 22 times. That’s better service than I’ve ever received!

Ludacris

Ludacris

Ludacris is an actor and rapper, probably best known these days for his role in the Fast and the Furious franchise. What’s really ludicrous, besides the fact that they are still making those Fast and the Furious movies, is the fact that such a successful actor and rapper can’t manage to leave a good tip.

One server told a publication called Stained Apron, "a big oaf from his posse sat himself at a table in my closed station. I politely informed him the station was not yet open and he rudely commented that ‘the manager said we could sit here.'” After this incident, Ludacris allegedly left a 10% tip.

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Catherine Zeta-Jones may be a stunning actress but her tipping skills aren’t even adequate. A server told Crushable, "She's very scowly and cold, won't smile or make eye contact, and gets short with you if you ask questions to clarify the special requests she makes with her order.”

The server also said, that even if you are waiting on her hand-and-foot, she may tip about 10 percent, and sometimes even lower. How celebrities like this, with so much money, can treat servers that way is beyond me. If you hate people so much, just stay out of public. And as you can see, this stuff will come back to haunt you.

Ron White

Ron White

Comedian Ron White’s tipping inadequacies are no joke. A server on Reddit claimed, "Ron White had a show across the street from the bar I worked at in downtown Denver. He came in with his posse and some girls and asked if he could sit on the patio. I said yes and we proceeded to serve him for the next hour and a half...until last call.”

At the end of this night, they were the only ones left in the restaurant and they had racked up a bill that was $1,200. They paid the bill but left no tip whatsoever. And no, it wasn’t an accident, because he actually wrote the amount of $0 on the tip line according to the server.

Michael Strahan

Michael Strahan

Michael Strahan is an American football player, journalist and former co-host on Live! With Kelly Ripa. And while he seems friendly on TV, behind the scenes he and Kelly Ripa didn’t get along well at all and apparently he doesn’t get along with others much either.

A reddit user said, "I once waited on Michael Strahan working at California Pizza Kitchen...Gave the guy prompt, courteous service, never got intrusive, treated him as a regular person, checked on him once to make sure everything was cool, pretty much everything you need to do to make sure the customer has a nice dining experience while barely being there yourself. Gave stiff, one-word dullard responses the entire time and then left me about 5 percent tip as his thanks." Yikes.
