Gift Cards: The Perfect Christmas Gift

The holidays are a time for giving, but it can be a stressful time when searching for the perfect gifts for all of your loved ones. The solution? Gift cards. They’ve gotten a bad rap over the years, mostly because they’re seen as last-minute gifts that don’t require much thought or time. But in reality, gift cards are so much more than that.

  1. Gift Cards are practical.
I can’t tell you how many hundreds of dollars my mother wasted over the years buying clothes for me and my sister that we never ended up wearing. Christmas is a time to give, but it’s much more practical to give loved ones something that they actually want – so why not let them pick it out themselves?
  2. Gift Cards are inexpensive.
It’s important to plan out a budget and figure out how much money you want to spend on each person. Whether the amount is $15 or $75, there’s a gift card for you. It’s easy to go over-budget when picking out unique gifts for each individual person, especially if your plan is to buy a bunch of individual items to make a fun gift bag. But with a gift card, you’re guaranteed to stay on-budget.
  3. Gift Cards are the perfect last-minute solution.
So it’s the week before Christmas and you still haven’t figured out what to get your in-laws? Are they into sports or hunting? Get them a Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card. Do they like to eat (because who doesn’t)? Get them gift cards to their favorite restaurants. Don’t know what they like? Get them a Visa or MasterCard gift card, so they can spend it on whatever and wherever they want. As long as you toss it in a cute card, it's thoughtful, right?

When buying a gift card, it's all about using common sense. Your grandma who knits everyone a scarf every year? She probably won't want a gift card. Your 17-year-old neice who has a new favorite band every week? She'll love it! With a dash of thought and consideration, you can match a gift card to just about anyone's needs.
