How Do I Change My Social Security Direct Deposit?

You have three options; two of them can be done from the comfort of your home. You can:

  1. Go to your local social security office and fill out a direct deposit sign-up form. Click here to view the form.
  2. Call Social Security directly at 800-772-1213 (TTY 800-325-0078). A representative will change your information with you over the phone.
  3. Access your social security account online here.

If you don’t have a My Social Security account, it’s worth signing up for one. Not only can you change your direct deposit bank online, but you can also change your contact information and request copies of important documents, such as your benefit verification letter. Account set-up is easy and free. All you need is an email address. After going to the My Social Security homepage, click on “Create An Account”. After verifying your identity, you’ll need to make a username and password.

Even after you officially change your direct deposit bank, hold off on closing your old bank account. It can take a month or two for the benefits to arrive in the new account—regardless of whether you changed your bank online or over the phone.
