How Much Does the Average Baby Gift Cost?

Baby showers are a good way for expecting parents to help ease the financial burden that comes with a new baby. When creating your baby registry, it can be difficult to know how much you should expect from your guests. You don’t want to ask for too much, but you want to know how much money you should plan on spending on your own. Therefore, knowing the average value of baby gifts you can expect to receive makes financial planning much easier.

Many factors determine how much a guest will spend on their gift for your baby shower. One of the biggest factors is how well they know you, though their personal financial situation is a factor as well. The closer you are to someone, the more money you can realistically expect for them to spend at your shower.

For acquaintances or coworkers, a gift of $20 to $25 is fairly typical. You should not expect anything larger from people you do not associate with as much. Closer friends might give a gift that costs closer to $50, while best friends or family members might give gifts valued at around $100. The general etiquette for baby showers is typically that you should spend more the closer you are to the recipient.

Etiquette does in part dictate the value of a baby gift, but financial situations can sometimes play an even bigger role. Friends or even acquaintances who have more money might give larger gifts, but those with less money may only be able to afford a smaller gift.
