How "Over-Registering" Can Save You Money

Wedding registries are a huge help when it comes to gifts for weddings. They help the guests to know what you actually want and will use, which saves time and money for both them and you. But, how can you make the most out of this beneficial arrangement? If your goal is to avoid spending large amounts of your own money, you can over-register. Here are some reasons why registering for too much can save you money in the long run.

  1. Only Get Gifts You Want: Guaranteed
If you register for gifts but the list runs out of items, people will buy you gifts they think you need. Aka, they will guess. While you can trust that there won’t be duplicates from the registry, you have no control over what they are going to get you. You will want to make sure to over-register so that whenever someone buys you a gift it is something you have picked out and will be able to use.
  2. Wedding Registry = Coupons
Keep an eye on what different stores are offering for after-wedding discounts on uncompleted registry lists. Many stores will keep your registry open for a time after the wedding, allowing time for late gifts, and also giving you discounts for purchases you make directly from your registry. Many of these discounts are around 10%, so having a registry that is larger than what you think you will receive and making use of that discount after your wedding can end up saving you a good amount of money -- especially if you put furniture or larger home appliances on your registry.
  3. More Options, More Gifts
Getting what you need is important, but making sure your guests will be able to afford what you register for is also important. If you make a registry that has everything you need but is way above what your guests can realistically pay for then you won’t be gaining much from the arrangement in the long run. If you are going to register for some higher dollar items then make sure to register for some that are under $50 as well. This will not only create a diverse amount of gifts but will also allow guests to work within their own budget, and thus increasing the total amount of gifts you receive. The more options your guests have for gift ideas the more they will be able to purchase.
