What is an Identity Theft Attorney?

What do you do after a thief steals your identity? Contacting an attorney is one of the first actions many people take, and it could be a smart decision for you. The task of recovering your identity can be difficult to do on your own, but an identity theft attorney could help you do that and more.

An identity theft attorney is hired with the task of clearing your name and handling the aftermath of identity theft. Some of the most common things an identity theft attorney handles are filing a police report, filing a report with the Federal Trade Commission, contacting financial institutions, calling the three major credit reporting bureaus, and checking with creditors and debt collection agencies to be sure the accounts are valid.

These are all things someone can do without the assistance of legal aid, but having someone with experience on your side can make the process quicker and more bearable. It may also be useful if creditors and debt collection agencies refuse to remove fraudulent accounts, stating that the debt is valid. An attorney can take them to court or contact agencies to eliminate the information from your records.
